LOCATION
The institute headquarters is located at Dehra Dun (
Uttaranchal - INDIA). It represents typical
humid subtropical climate of Western mid to foot hill Himalayas receiving average annual
rainfall of 1681 mm spread over 98 rainy days. 82 per cent of the total annual
precipitation occurs during June - Sept. On an average 150 mm of winter rainfall can
also be expected during December - February . Hail storm may occur during April -May
. Sun shine during July and August is low (5 - 6 hr.). Average maximum and minimum
temperatures are 30 degrees and 3.5 degrees Celsius during May and January respectively.
Moderate to severe frosts occur during December and January.
MANDATE
Undertake research and develop strategies for controlling land degradation under all primary production systems and rehabilitation of degraded lands in different agro-ecological zones of the country.
Act as a repository of information on the status of soil
degradation/soil and water conservation
Provide leadership and co-ordinate research network with State Agricultural
Universites/Instituions/NGO's State departments for developing location specific
technologies in the area of soil and water conservation
Act as national and International Center for training in research methodologies and
updated technologies in soil and water conservation, watershed development and its
management
Provide consultancy and collaborate with national and International institutions in the field of soil and water conservation
