EROSION   PROBLEMS

 

> About 150 million ha of land is threatened with serious erosion hazards in our country.

> About 5334 million tones(16.5 t/ha) of soil is eroded annually

> About 5.37 to 8.40 million tones of soil nutrients are lost through water erosion

< Ravines are spread over 3.67 m ha

< Hill area have serious problems of land slides, torrents, slips and thoughtless encroachment

< Denudation of forest in various watershed has resulted in the floods, choes and torrents

> The north-eastern region suffers from the hazards of shifting cultivation, floods and stream bank erosion

> The south and south-east black and red soils undergo severe sheet and rill erosion

> Arid and coastal areas experience severe water and wind erosion
