Water management training organized at ICAR-IISWC in collaboration with Central Ground Water Board

One day training program on “Water Management” was organized at the ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (ICAR-IISWC)Dehradun on 26th Feb, 2016. The progam was organized by the Central Groundwater Board, Uttarakhand Region, Dehradun in association with ICAR-IISWCThis program was organized as a part of Jal Kranti Abhiyan 2015-16, Ministry of water resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, New Delhi to address the issue of de-saturation of aquifer, deterioration of groundwater quality, water harvesting and recycling, spring rejuvenation, water quality management, integrated farming and implications of PMKSY.

Total of 62 participants from 22 different organizations including Swajal Board, Jal Nigam, Irrigation Department, Agriculture Department, Fisheries Department, Forest Research Institute, Forest Survey of India, Doon University, Graphic Era University, Uttaranchal University, DBS college and NABARD, and People Science Institute with the interest of water management attended the program.

Dr PK Mishra, Director, ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun during his inaugural address highlighted the importance of water management and cooperated actions to tackle the challenges of water stress.  The Day was marked by 5 lectures and a poster exhibition on various technical issues and concepts of water management.Groundwater scenario of Uttarakhand, rainwater harvesting, recycling and water use efficiency, spring rejuvenation and management, water quality management. sector-specific approaches and techniques, multiple uses of water and integrated farming and approaches followed and impacts of PMKSY on water management have been addressed.

Er Anurag Khanna, Head of Office, CGWB, Dehradun presented on the groundwater prospects of the Uttarakhand. Er SS Srimali, Sr Scientist (CAA and LWM Engg) elaborated the technologies and wisdom involved in the water conservation, water harvesting and recycling. Dr M Muruganandam, Sr Scientist (Fisheries) delved over the water quality issues and sector-specific water quality requirements, monitoring and assessment. Dr DR Sena, Principal Scientist (LWM Engg) presented issues of PMKSY and district water management plans. Dr UK Maurya, Sr Scientist (Soil Science) presentenced the details of modern technique to study groundwater flow and spring rejuvenation.

Dr M Muruganandam, Sr Scientist (Fisheries), ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun and Dr Ravikalyan Bussa, Scientist ‘C’ CGW Board, Dehradun coordinated the program with active support of Sh HS Bhatia, Sh Rakesh Kumar and Er Amit Chauhan, Senior-level Technical Officers of the ICAR-IISWC. The training programme provided knowledge to those working in the domain of water resources with experience in water conservation, especially Assistant Engineers/Junior Engineers, Asst Professors, Faculty Members, Asst Directors, Project Engineers, Environment specialists, and Scholars. The program highlighted the continuing stressed condition of water resources, need for the appreciation of water related risks and responses to the challenges by adoption of water management technologies, groundwater and spring rejuvenation. The participants recorded high score of learning on water management in their feedback.
